Well, today I'm officially finished with school. It was a little sad saying goodbye to all the teachers and watching the people come in to rip out the carpet. I guess we are going to have yellow tile on one side of the hall and green on the other with a white stripe down the middle to remind us all which side of the hall to walk on. German, what is your take on the merits of green, yellow, white, and red as colors to decorate the school?
Because of all the negative comments about the plainness of my room, I am planning on painting one of my walls another color and adding some posters (still cycling, sorry). I also have to finish a grant proposal by next week to get some more equipment for the room so I will be busy.
I already miss you guys, especially the 8th graders I see logging on the blog because I know I won't have them next year. Make sure you include your e-mail address in your profile so I can say hello throughout the summer and next year.
I rode up the Monument today after I got off work and someone honked at me and almost ran me over. I don't know for sure, but I suspect it was the O'Banion's clan or maybe Olevia Shafer's mom. Hard to say.
Anyway, thanks for the occasional math comment (although the other comments are very amusing - it was big of you, Maddie, to admit you were lying). To answer your question on the (8a-4a^2)-(7a^3-a) you DO NOT use the FOIL method, that is only for multiplying binomials, not adding or subtracting. Just add the opposite of everything inside the parentheses (using the distributive property) and then collect like terms. So it would be 8a - 4a^2 - 7a^3+a which then simplifies to -7a^3-4a^2+9a when you put them in order from highest to lowest degree (the only like terms were the a's).
Anyway, I show two people having done the Week One assignment so far (all the problem #2's) - Maddie and Neigh. You still have a week left, so good job! I will be busy tomorrow installing a new bike rack (a birthday present from me to me) and then doing some riding. Please tell the O'Banion's and Shafer's to stop scaring me.

Yeah that is true about the colors being sick, but what i want to know is who came up with GATORS? I mean, couldn't the people who chose it have given the future students a little slack? Oh well i guess it doesn't matter anymore 'cause i'm not in middle school anymore!

German - Sadly, I am serious. I think the hall is going to look hideous and echo. It would be a little better if they changed the colors of the lockers, but those are going to remain red. I have no idea who chose the colors; it was just announced on the last day. I'm betting it was Mr. Spellman.
As to the Garfield Gators, that also perplexes me. There isn't an actual alligator native to the area for thousands of miles. We might as well be the dolphins. The only thing Gators has going for it is that it has that aliteration thing going for it. Well, and the school is long and narrow...and so is an alligator. Hmmm...

Pinocchio - I have to take my stinking bike rack to a machine shop to be customized. Add $100 to the cost of the rack. But I'd be spending that returning it by mail, so... Plus, my new bike does deserve a nice place to ride. Ahhh...a thing of beauty.

I've been way too lazy today, but I did go to Hastings and get the 4 books OB1 assigned me to read over the summer (The Giver, Gathering Blue, Anthem, and Fahrenheit 451) and get a tasty pita at the Pita Pit. Yum! Now I need to do some reading and then go for a bike ride. I have a choice between going to Spiderman 3 or the new Pirates tonight. Suggestions?

James and Laura - I'm starting with The Giver, so don't get too far ahead of me on Gathering Blue. I should be able to finish up The Giver today or tomorrow.
If anyone needs a good read Stephen White's "Kill Me" is really good. It takes place in Ridgeway and is about a guy who is really rich and decides after a heli-skiing accident that he wants to take out "death" insurance. Basically, if he should become permanently disabled that he's hired an assassin to kill him so he doesn't suffer. In a fairly predictable, but entertaining, plot twist he gets a brain aneurysm and doesn't want to be killed. Chase ensues.

Hey Tux - Good for you for doing a few math problems. I AM very proud of you!(Now finish them). Isn't tonight the fireworks display at JUCO? I live a few blocks away so I always sit out and watch them if I'm not at the game.

Mr. Cookie I agree with you we should have a better mascot. There is one gator in Palisade though. 50 years ago a circus was here and their aligator escaped and has lived in Grand Junction ever since. It died 3 years ago though.

Okay, so I'm halfway finished with The Giver. I've read it before, but it's been a LONG time. So, for anyone that got this book, here are my thoughts/perspectives/questions:
1) I'm always wondering the where/when (i.e. setting) of each novel I read. I'm guessing future and a relatively isolated portion of an English speaking area. They also obviously don't dominate the area because of the aircraft flying overhead is mentioned as being an outsider later in the book. Any other guesses?
2) In the community they live in they carefully regulate everything to minimize differences (even to the point of eliminating colors and regulating skin color)in order to manage conflict. Is it our differences that cause us conflict? I think you can make a pretty solid case that is correct. Look at religion, money, beauty, politics, etc. it's the differences that cause us strife. That's where we get the big case for school uniforms. The prevailing thought is that if we all wore the same uniform to school there would be less conflict surrounding who's wearing what and how much money their parents make. But is it worth giving up what makes us unique? Give me your thoughts.
3) You've got to love a society where everyone uses a bicycle!
4) Arranged marriages with only adopted children (1 boy and 1 girl). Weird. And the parents (all adults beyond puberty) take pills to eliminate the hormonal "stirrings." Then when the kids are raised, the parents separate. Interesting idea. The book says they have never had a divorce. Statistics would say we don't do a very good job of picking our own mate (over 50% divorce rate). Is it worth doing this to eliminate the strife of divorce? Your thoughts?
5) Has anyone seen M. Night Shamalaya's "The Village"? This reminds me of that.

Just checking in for the day. I spent it protesting my property taxes, getting my bike rack fixed, enjoying another scrumptious pita at the Pita Pit, reading The Giver, going on a bike ride with Lexi on the tag-along bike, and having dinner at Pablo's Pizza. All-in-all, a good day. Tomorrow I will be part of an interview team helping to select the science teacher that will take Mr. Steele's position. I'll give you an update on the condition of the carpet.
You guys are doing a great job with the blog. I show we have 10 people finished with the first assignment already (just 18 more to go!).
Tux, you should watch The Pursuit of Happyness if you haven't already. It made me sad/happy. You'd like it.

p.s. I agree with Neigh about summers. At least overall. I would prefer to do the year-around school and split the time off more evenly throughout the year. It seems like you enjoy it more when there's less of it at one time. If we split it up throughout the year we would go 9 weeks, be off 4, on 9 off 4, on 9 off 4, on 9 then off 6 (half of June and all of July). Wouldn't that be better?

Moa - As it stands right now, Ms. O'Brien will be teaching the incoming 6th graders, but it seems to change from day to day. MGMS requested an additional teacher for next year (what room they would teach from, i don't know...) and we have not heard back on that. It is possible we will go from the 3 90 minute blocks to 4 70ish minute blocks, but that depends on that position coming through. The benefit to making that move would be to have science and social studies taught concurrently throughout the year, which I strongly think we should be doing. I'll let everyone know as soon as I know what the plan is for next year.

Moa - It doesn't sound appealing, but then the first person who ate shrimp or crab must have had to overcome some initial questions. Shrimp and crab are pretty ugly to look at. Of course, cows aren't very attractive either. Nothing against cows, mind you, but can we judge the tastiness of a creature based on its looks? Hmmm... You've really got me thinking. Based on that logic we'd all be eating cute animals like puppies and kittens, so yeah, maybe a pizza smoothie would be delicious.
Goebel and Laura - I'm starting Gathering Blue today. I have to do a lot of yard work first, but I'll get there.

omg me and maddie stayed up pretty much all nite, and im awake and shes not yet, but we watched click (made me cry cuz im a sissy) ummmm 40 yr old virgin (lol), ummmm the breakup, and jackars dos. soooo funny. then i was fallin asleep and she saved me witha redbull and mms. so ya. sooooo much fun!! and yesterday, i went to the pool, and one arm is sunburned cuz i got sidetracked when i was puttin sunscreen on...lol. a.d.d. lol.ummmmm ya. yay.

Yeah Cook, I agree about the Giver... it's like one of my all-time favorite books, but the ending is just, well, weird I guess. It really makes you think, doesn't it? I mean, would it be better if everyone was all the same? Or would it just create more conflict?

i think that crabs are pretty and they are yummy but they make my face break out and are really gross if they are cooked by my aunt(who, by the way doesnt know how to cook crabs)she forgot to clean them before she cooked them and this yellowish greenish mustardyish fluid came out of them and it grossed me out.

mr cook. i swim @ 8PM not AM.... ya i went 2night...... it wuz fery exciting. ya but im @ the pool every day from 1-5(ish) then (8pm-9pm) so now i am getting kinda tannish...... it's creepy cuz iv only been 2 the pool...4 like.... 3 or 4 days and i already have a BIG TIME tan line. and im only tan on my back... wich makes me depressed....... ya i still haven't watched the persuit of happiness (or however the heck u spell it).... sorry... i find swimming mor important....
